Sally began her legal career litigating complex medical malpractice cases. Over the course of her career, she has been involved in numerous medical malpractice actions from inception to trial. Sally’s practice includes evaluation of cases for settlement, mediation, summary judgement or trial; conduct and defend depositions; negotiate and settle cases; argue motions; pursue various strategies and discovery tools to challenge liability and limit damages; and evaluate standard of care with experts for settlement and trial. Sally’s practice involves complex medical malpractice defense litigation.
Sally graduated Salutatorian from St. Joseph’s University (B.S. Health Administration) and Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center. At Touro, she received honors as a member of the editorial board for Touro Law Review; competitor in the John S. Bainbridge Moot Court competition; and CALI Academic Excellence Award in recognition of her work with the International Human Rights Asylum Clinic.
Sally is admitted to practice in the State of New York and before the United States District Court in the Eastern District.
Sally is a Registered Nurse with a subspecialty in the operating room. She completed her RN and operating room training in London, England. In New York, she worked in the operating rooms at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, NY. In that role, Sally assessed and prepared patients for surgery, ensured medical equipment is available for procedures, positioned and prepared the patient on the operating table, anticipate surgical moves and pass instruments to the surgeon, monitor vital signs to detect anomalies; and adhere to standards and precautions. This unique background and experience give her a distinct advantage when advising and advocating on behalf of health care providers involved in medical malpractice or other acts of negligence.
Ms. Kassim-Schaefer was invited to join the faculty at St. Joseph’s University following graduation from Touro Law School. Sally lectured as an Adjunct Professor at the beautiful Clinton Hill campus of St. Joseph’s University in Brooklyn from 2001 to 2006. She taught several health-related courses and Legal Aspects of Health Care. Currently, Sally is an Adjunct Lecturer at the Patchogue, Long Island campus of St. Joseph’s University since 2010. She engages students with real life cases, role play and active participation and presentations within the class.
Ms. Kassim-Schaefer served as general counsel for CADVA (Caribbean American Domestic Violence Awareness). CADVA was founded by a victim who became a survivor and used negative personal experiences to create positive outcomes to help others become survivors too.
Ms. Kassim-Schaefer proudly trained youth athletes to compete and finish multiple triathlons and duathlons. Competitions took place at the Boy Scout Reservation in Long Island Barrens at Wading River, NY. Sally helped the athletes to obtain sponsors and raise money; donating thousands of dollars to Make-A-Wish foundation of Long Island for multiple years.
Ms. Kassim-Schaefer currently serves on the Executive Board of her local school district. She also serves as Chair for the Health and Wellness Committee at her local school. She is a longtime supporter of Big Brother Big Sister of Long Island.
